All dogs have anal glands, which are small sacs inside their anuses. They are there to help lubricate the passing of a dog’s bowel movement and act as a fingerprint for other dogs to identify them. If they become filled, your pet will become uncomfortable and they will need to be expressed. If left untreated, they can become infected and cause a severe issue.

Should I drain my dog’s anal glands at home?

As not all dogs experience issues with their anal glands, it is not recommended to express their glands if they don’t need it. If your pet is one who requires this procedure on a regular basis, it can be completed at home or at our hospital.

If my dog scoots on the carpet, does this mean their anal glands are impacted?

When a dog scoots on the carpet, it doesn’t necessarily mean their glands are impacted. Although this is a common behaviour for dogs with impacted glands, there can be many other reasons for scooting, such as allergies or parasites.
